Charlie Chieftain

Our loveable school mascot, Charlie Chieftain, was the creation of Arlo Larson, ’60. In 2009, I was spending most of my time sleuthing for people like me who had worked on the staff of our student newspaper, The Arrow. One of the people I found was Arlo, who as a founding member of the The Arrow was the Art Editor.

In our back and forth emails I learned that Arlo is still very proud of his chubby Indian caricature but was saddened to learn that the PC Police had banned the presence of Charlie from the CHS campus many moons ago.

Then one day in the mail I received from Arlo a hand drawn and signed original of Charlie Chieftain, and this is the same image I use with all my alumni efforts (after I added a splash of color.)
